ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at determining farmer’s adoption of improved technology in cassava production and processing in peri-urban areas of Edo state using Ikpoba Okha and Ovia North East local government areas as case studies. Purposive sampling was used to select 6 wards from which simple random sampling was used to select each of 148 cassava farmers from the 6 wards. The data was analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to test the hypothesis. It was found that majority of the farmers are male (67.5%), married (74.32%) above 41-50 years of age (32.5%); low youth participation (10%) in cassava production and processing.  The major findings of the study revealed that changes in the social status of farmers will result in changes in adoption level of improved production technology. The findings also discovered that cassava farmers’ sources of information on improved production technology affects their adoption of these technologies. With respect to the findings, it was recommended that youths should be encouraged to participate in cassava production by providing them with production inputs, land, credit and encouraging them to join cooperatives to enable them participate fully in cassava production.
